XU CAN (徐灿) is a Senior Researcher at Tencent Hunyuan, having joined in May 2025. He is the creator of the WizardLM project.
He earned his B.S. from Sichuan University and his M.S. from Peking University (advisor: Yu Jingsong). He joined Microsoft in 2017 as a Senior Research Scientist, where he was a core contributor to Microsoft XiaoIce, Bing, WizardLM, and Phi-3.
He led the development of WizardLM 1&2, WizardCoder, and WizardMath. He has published 40+ papers at NeurIPS, ACL, ICLR, EMNLP, AAAAI with 3,300+ Google Scholar citations.
In May 2025, he announced on X that he and his team had left Microsoft to join Tencent Hunyuan.
