SHUM Harry (沈向洋, born October 1966) is the Founding Chairman of the International Digital Economy Academy (IDEA, 粤港澳大湾区数字经济研究院) in Shenzhen and an Adjunct Professor at Tsinghua University's Institute for Advanced Study. He previously served as Executive Vice President of Microsoft's AI and Research group (2013-2020), overseeing Microsoft's global AI strategy and research labs.
Shum was a founding member of Microsoft Research China (later renamed Microsoft Research Asia) in 1998 and served as its Managing Director from 2004 to 2007. He earned his B.S. from Southeast University, MPhil from the University of Hong Kong (1991), and Ph.D. in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University (1996) under Raj Reddy.
He is a Fellow of IEEE (2006) and ACM (2007), and a foreign member of both the US National Academy of Engineering (2017) and the UK's Royal Academy of Engineering (2018). He has published over 200 papers and holds 50+ US patents.
