We didn't set out to be a catfish; we just accidentally became one.
China's AI can't stay in the follower's position forever.
China inevitably needs someone to stand at the frontier of the technology.
LIANG Wenfeng (梁文锋, born 1985) is the founder and CEO of DeepSeek, the Hangzhou-based AI research lab that gained global recognition with its DeepSeek-R1 and DeepSeek-V3 models. Before founding DeepSeek in 2023, Liang co-founded High-Flyer Capital Management (幻方量化), a quantitative trading firm, in 2015.
High-Flyer grew to manage over 100 billion yuan (~$14B) in assets by 2021, becoming one of China's largest quant funds. Liang holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Information and Communication Engineering from Zhejiang University (graduated 2010).
In January 2025, DeepSeek's R1 model reportedly rivaled OpenAI's ChatGPT at a fraction of the training cost, making global headlines. Liang was named among Nature's top 10 'people who shaped science in 2025' and has been described as intensely private and low-profile.
